A predawn collision along the Great North Road in Chibombo District has claimed eight lives and left one person seriously injured, marking one of the area’s deadliest crashes this year.

The accident occurred on 23 November 2025 around 03:00 hours opposite the China Jiangxi Economic Zone along the Great North Road.

Police Public Relations Officer, Godfrey Chilabi, confirmed the incident in a statement, revealing that the crash involved a Nissan Caravan minibus, registration number AJG 1180ZM, heading towards Lusaka with six passengers on board, and a Hino Ranger, registration number ABT 5624, travelling in the opposite direction with one passenger.

According to Chilabi, the drivers of both vehicles have not yet been identified.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the accident happened when the driver of the Nissan Caravan attempted an improper overtaking manoeuvre, leading to a head-on collision with the oncoming Hino Ranger.

The impact claimed the lives of all six passengers and the driver of the Nissan Caravan on the spot,” he said.

He added that the driver of the Hino Ranger also died at the scene, while the male passenger in the Hino Ranger sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Liteta Hospital for medical attention.

Chilabi further stated that the bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the Liteta District Hospital Mortuary, awaiting identification and postmortem examinations.

He said a team of investigators from the Zambia Police Service Traffic Section is currently at the scene conducting further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

He urged motorists to prioritise road safety, especially during peak travel periods.

“We appeal to all road users to exercise maximum caution, adhere to traffic regulations, and avoid dangerous behaviour such as improper overtaking,” Chilabi said.

The Zambia Police Service has since extended condolences to the families of the deceased.
