Police in Chipili District of Luapula Province have arrested a 27-year-old man for allegedly raping and attempting to strangle an 83-year-old woman before falling asleep at the scene.
The suspect, identified as Davise Bwalya, was arrested in connection with an incident believed to have occurred between 23:00 hours on November 30 and 02:00 hours on December 1.
Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, adding that the matter was reported by the victim at 06:00 hours the following morning.
According to police brief facts, on November 30, 2025, at around 22:00 hours, the victim was at home waiting for her 10-year-old granddaughter, who had gone to visit her 53-year-old mother in a nearby area.
Due to rainfall, the granddaughter did not return, and the victim later went to sleep after securing the house.
Chilabi said the victim was shocked to find the suspect inside her bedroom moments later.
Bwalya allegedly attempted to strangle her by the neck and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her.

After the act, the suspect reportedly warned the victim not to tell anyone and promised to bring her relish later in the evening.
“He then fell asleep, giving the victim an opportunity to escape. She immediately informed her sister, who alerted Chipili Police,” Chilabi said.
Police officers responded and apprehended the suspect while he was still asleep at the scene.
Chilabi said the victim sustained general body pains and has since received medical attention.
“The suspect remains in police custody and will appear in court soon,” he said.
