Consumer body sounds the alarm over growing garbage dump behind Chilanga Cement PLC

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has raised serious concerns over the accumulation of garbage behind Chilanga Cement PLC and the former TAP Building Supplies area.

ZACA stated that the site has become a dumping ground for residents of Freedom Township, gradually turning into a small “Chingwele” dump site.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday, ZACA expressed worry over the apparent inaction of the Chilanga Town Council, Chilanga Cement PLC, and local civic leaders, despite the clear health and environmental risks.

The Consumers Association warned that if left unchecked, the situation could expose residents to diseases, environmental degradation, and other serious public health challenges.

“ZACA therefore urges Chilanga Town Council to immediately clear the garbage and enforce waste management by-laws,” the statement read.

The association also called on Chilanga Cement PLC to demonstrate corporate responsibility by supporting community waste management initiatives in the area.

ZACA further emphasized the need for civic leaders to proactively mobilize and educate residents on proper waste disposal practices.

“Failure to act now risks the situation escalating into a full-blown health hazard. ZACA calls for urgent and coordinated action before ‘hell breaks loose,’” the statement warned.
