A nurse from Lusaka Central Correctional Facility has been ordered to appear before the Lusaka Magistrates’ Court to testify on the health condition of Patriotic Front (PF) senior member, Chishimba Kambwili, who failed to attend court on Monday due to illness.

Magistrate Kawama Mwamfuli issued the directive after defence lawyer, Kennedy Mambwe, informed the court that Kambwili was unwell and presented a certificate of fitness from the facility.

However, the magistrate rejected the attempt to tender the document from the bar, insisting that the nurse appear in person to explain the matter.

“The nurse had to go back to attend to other patients at the facility, thus we wish to tender in the said document as part of the evidence,” Mambwe submitted.

But Magistrate Mwamfuli ruled: “You cannot do that, counsel. The nurse should come and testify tomorrow at 12:00. The State may have questions for her.”

Kambwili, who was transported from Kasama where he is serving a jail sentence for hate speech, is facing another charge in Lusaka.

It is alleged that on January 26, 2023, in Lusaka, Kambwili, jointly and acting with others unknown, unlawfully assembled with intent to commit an offence or breach of peace.
