Despite dominating possession as the game wore on, Chelsea found clear chances hard to come by. Reece James came closest before the break with a thunderous strike that cannoned off the post.
In a match reported by the Independent, it was James who later created the breakthrough, dancing on the edge of the box before delivering a perfect cross for Cucurella to head in the winner.
The result sees Chelsea remain inside the top five, with just one win needed on the final day to seal Champions League qualification.
Aston Villa, who defeated Tottenham earlier in the evening, remain close behind.
