The Development People’s Party (DPP) has raised concerns over recent government appointments made by President Hakainde Hichilema, saying the changes demand greater accountability and scrutiny.
DPP President, Kafula Mubanga, said the appointments of Alex Katakwe and Mufunelo Malama, along with the dismissal of Mathews Chilekwa, raise questions about the administration’s priorities.
Mubanga told Zambia Monitor in an Interview on Sunday that while the Constitution of Zambia gives the president authority to hire and dismiss officials, political decisions require broader scrutiny beyond legality.
He criticised the timing of the appointments — made just weeks before Parliament adjourns — saying the new ministers will not be subjected to immediate parliamentary oversight.

“The health sector and SME space are struggling, and Muchinga Province needs stronger administration,”Mubanga said.
He argued that the government’s reform rhetoric was being tested against what he called a lack of measurable progress.
Mubanga urged the newly appointed leaders to focus on delivering meaningful improvements.
“Leadership changes must deliver tangible improvements that resonate with the people, not merely echo within the corridors of power,” he said.
He called on President Hichilema to ensure the appointments enhance governance, improve service delivery and restore public confidence.
“Political rhetoric must be matched by political responsibility,” he said, stressing the need for accountability.
