Disputed PF president, Makebi Zulu, Lubinda face contempt charges over defiant convention

Newly elected Makebi Zulu, alongside Given Lubinda and other senior members of the Patriotic Front, have been summoned before the Kabwe High Court for alleged contempt of court following a disputed weekend convention.

The legal action was initiated by PF faction Secretary, General Morgan Ng’ona, who accused the group of defying a standing court injunction by proceeding to hold an elective convention.

According to an affidavit in support of an application for leave, Ng’ona secured an interim injunction on November 12, 2025, barring party officials from holding meetings, issuing statements, or conducting any activities in the name of the Patriotic Front. The order was granted by High Court Judge Kelvin Limbani.

Despite this directive, the convention went ahead on March 21, 2026, culminating in the election of Makebi Zulu as party president.

“This was a clear and deliberate disregard of the authority of the court,” Ng’ona stated in his affidavit.

Those cited in the contempt proceedings include Jean Kapata, Frank Ng’ambi, Mumbi Phiri, Lawrence Sichalwe, and former Solicitor General Abraham Mwansa, who acted as returning officer at the alleged illegal convention.

Ng’ona argued that the cited individuals not only attended the event but also played key roles—such as overseeing and announcing election results—despite the subsisting court order.

He maintained that their actions directly contravened the injunction, which had prohibited any convention-related activities or roadmap until the main matter before the court was fully resolved.
