A first-half strike from Théo Bongonda proved decisive as DR Congo secured a hard-fought 1–0 victory over Benin in an Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) encounter marked by stoppages, missed chances and late pressure.

Bongonda netted the only goal of the match in the 16th minute, finishing with his left foot from close range after being set up by Arthur Masuaku to give the Leopards an early advantage.

Benin responded with increased attacking intent, creating several chances through Aiyegun Tosin, Dodo Dokou and Tamimou Ouorou, but struggled to convert their opportunities despite sustained spells of pressure.

DR Congo appeared to have doubled their lead early in the second half when Cédric Bakambu found the net, only for the goal to be ruled out following a VAR review for offside, keeping Benin in contention.

The closing stages were tense, with 10 minutes of added time announced as Benin pushed forward in search of an equaliser. Tosin came closest in stoppage time, forcing a crucial save from DR Congo goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi.

Despite frequent stoppages due to injuries and a flurry of yellow cards, the Congolese defence—anchored by Chancel Mbemba and Axel Tuanzebe—held firm to see out the result.

The victory strengthens DR Congo’s position in the AFCON campaign, while Benin were left to rue missed opportunities in a closely contested match.
