Ekitike scores against former club as Liverpool thrash Frankfurt 5–1 to end losing streak

Hugo Ekitike scored against his former club as Liverpool emphatically ended their losing streak, coming from behind to thrash Eintracht Frankfurt in the Champions League.

After a blistering start to the season with seven consecutive wins in all competitions, the Reds had suffered a worrying dip in form, losing four matches in a row — including a Premier League defeat to arch-rivals Manchester United on Sunday.

Initially, it seemed their troubles would continue after a sluggish start in Germany, where former Leeds United defender Rasmus Kristensen put Frankfurt ahead.

But Liverpool responded strongly. Ekitike — starting alongside British-record signing Alexander Isak for the first time — levelled the score 10 minutes before half-time, racing onto Andy Robertson’s superb long ball and finishing calmly past the goalkeeper.

According to the BBC, four minutes later, Virgil van Dijk powered home a header from a corner to give Liverpool the lead, before Ibrahima Konaté made it 3-1 just a minute before the interval with another header from a set piece.

The Ekitike–Isak partnership lasted only one half, as the former Newcastle forward did not return after the break. Manager Arne Slot later confirmed Isak had sustained a groin injury.

By then, Liverpool were firmly in control and showed no signs of easing off.

Cody Gakpo extended the lead midway through the second half, firing in his fourth goal of the season from Florian Wirtz’s square pass.

Dominik Szoboszlai completed the rout with a stunning long-range strike, once again assisted by Wirtz, to seal a commanding victory that restored Liverpool’s momentum in Europe.
