Energy Minister, Chikote, launches 100MW Maamba Solar Project

Energy Minister, Makozo Chikote, on Monday officiated at the groundbreaking ceremony for the 100MW Maamba Solar Energy Project in Sinazongwe District, Southern Province.

The project, valued at US$90 million, is part of Maamba Energy Limited’s expansion plan to raise its total generation capacity to 700MW by 2026, a move expected to strengthen Zambia’s energy security.

Chikote said the project was a timely response to the power shortages experienced during the 2023/2024 drought.

He stressed that government policies were creating a conducive environment for private sector participation in renewable energy, reducing the country’s historic dependence on hydropower.

“This project demonstrates private sector confidence in government policies and reflects Zambia’s commitment to renewable energy as a strategic pathway to rapidly expand generation capacity and address the current power deficit,” Chikote said.

Maamba Solar Energy Limited Director, Ashwin Devineni, commended government for fostering stability in the sector, noting that the project would be completed within 10 months, starting September 1, 2025 using state-of-the-art technology.

The Energy Minister praised Maamba Energy Limited for heeding government’s call to invest in alternative energy sources, describing the project as a milestone for the company, the local community, and the nation’s energy future.

He further highlighted progress in solar development, noting that 125MW of new solar PV capacity had already been commissioned, with additional projects underway.

Chikote reaffirmed government’s commitment to removing barriers, accelerating project implementation, and expanding electricity access to support industrialisation and economic growth.

The Minister also thanked traditional leaders and the Sinazongwe community for their support, assuring them of meaningful participation and benefits from the project.

He urged other private sector players to emulate Maamba Energy Limited by investing in renewable projects nationwide.
