The Zambian entertainment industry is in mourning following the death of Mpali series actress, Wanga Zulu, fondly known by her on-screen name Amai Guru.

Fans and fellow actors woke up to the heartbreaking news on Friday morning, with social media flooded by messages of condolence and tributes celebrating her life and career.

While the cause of death had not yet been disclosed, Zulu was open about her health struggles in the past.

In 2014, she revealed that she had been diagnosed with cancer and received treatment with the support of compassionate medical staff.

Tragically, her passing comes during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a poignant reminder of the disease that continues to claim many lives.

Fellow Mpali cast members expressed deep sorrow at her death, describing her as a kind, nurturing, and inspiring figure both on and off screen.

Her close friend and co-star Anna Munamonga, who plays Mwiza, one of Nguzu’s wives in the hit Zambezi Magic drama, shared a heartfelt message on Facebook accompanied by weeping emojis and photos of the two actresses.

“Wanga shuwa monga boza, RIP [Wanga my friend, as if it’s a lie],” she wrote, with Rock of Ages playing softly in the background of the tribute.

Another Mpali co-star, Monde Ndaka (Shupiwe), simply posted: “Mai Guru no 😭😭😭😭”

Actor Shazzy Phiri, who plays Ms Zulu’s on-screen son, Haimbe, shared a blank black image on his social media status, reflecting his shock and grief.

Fellow actor Cosmas Ngandwe (Logic) also joined in mourning, writing:

“Rest in peace, Mamy Wanga Zulu. You have fought your race. Mpali will miss you! 😭”

Veteran actor Patrick Salubusa, a former president of the National Association of Media Arts (NAMA), described Ms Zulu’s passing as a great loss to the Zambian film industry.

“Go well, my sister. Mpali and the entire film industry will never be the same without your gentle, beautiful soul. Farewell, Wanga Zulu, our beloved Amai Guru. Your passing has truly broken my heart,” he said.

Wanga Zulu’s contribution to Zambia’s creative arts leaves a lasting legacy, remembered not only for her memorable performances but also for her warmth and humanity that touched many lives.
