A 28-year-old fisherman has died after a hippopotamus attacked and capsized a canoe he was using while fishing on the Itezhi-Tezhi Dam.
Southern Province Deputy Police Commanding Officer, Moono Namalongo, confirmed the incident, describing it as a case of human-wildlife conflict.
He said the victim, Kelvin Chinyemba, drowned on the night of July 20, 2025.
According to a report filed by Chinyemba’s older brother, Kenny Chinyemna, 35, of Nakanbangwe Township, the deceased had gone fishing with his friend, Dunken Musengu, who survived the attack.

“The incident occurred at around 21:00 hours while the two were fishing. A hippo charged at their canoe, causing it to overturn,” Namalongo said in a statement.
He added that Chinyemba’s body was recovered around 12:30 hours on Monday by local fishermen. The body was found trapped in a fishing net, and a police inspection revealed no visible injuries.
This incident comes amid a worrying increase in hippo attacks in the region. At least four people have died in separate incidents on Lake Itezhi-Tezhi and Lake Kariba within the past month.
