Four people have died in a road traffic accident on the Chirundu–Kafue Road in the Kapiringogozi area around on Sunday, the Zambia Police Service has confirmed.
The accident involved an Iveco truck, registration AJC 386, which was transporting building materials and driven by 45-year-old Emmanuel Shanyinde of Chipata Compound in Lusaka.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the vehicle was headed towards Chirundu with three male passengers on board.
One of the passengers has been identified as Emmanuel Kasweka, 43, of SOS area in Lusaka, while the other two have not yet been identified but are believed to be between 28 and 35 years old.
“Tragically, the driver and all three passengers sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot. All four bodies have been deposited at Mtendere Mission Hospital Mortuary for identification and postmortem examinations,” Chilabi said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed, causing the vehicle to veer off the road, plunge into a ditch, and overturn.
Chilabi said investigations are ongoing.
He further urged motorists to strictly adhere to road traffic regulations to help prevent fatal crashes.
“The Zambia Police Service urges all motorists to strictly observe road traffic regulations, particularly speed limits, to safeguard lives,” he said.
