FQM moves to enhance transparency, inclusivity in procurement processes

0

First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has reportedly launched a new Expression of Interest (EOI) portal designed to enhance transparency and inclusivity in its procurement processes, offering equal access to business opportunities for all prospective suppliers.

Speaking at the ongoing Agriculture and Commercial Show in Lusaka, Kansanshi Mine Corporate Affairs Specialist, Clinton Masumba, said the digital platform will serve as a central database to engage more effectively with local suppliers and contractors.

“The portal enables us to keep records of potential suppliers for future use and enhances our engagement with local businesses. By working with them, we are building capacity and injecting financial resources that support their growth,” he said.

Masumba revealed that between 2022 and 2024, FQM doubled its annual procurement spend on Zambian citizen-owned companies—from US$144 million to US$294 million—underscoring the mining giant’s commitment to local content.

“This is not just about doing business; it’s about empowering communities and contributing to national economic development,” he added.

Meanwhile, FQM’s highly anticipated S3 Expansion Project at Kansanshi Mine is set for official commissioning by President Hakainde Hichilema on August 19.

“The S3 project has extended the life of the mine by 20 years, through to approximately 2049. It includes a new processing plant circuit and expanded mining equipment, significantly increasing our production capacity,” Masumba explained.

He also confirmed that the Cold Box, a crucial component for oxygen production used in copper smelting, was now operational.
