Goal-keeping errors cost Spurs in 3-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario had an afternoon to forget as his side slumped to a dismal 3-0 defeat away to Nottingham Forest.

Vicario was twice at fault as Callum Hudson-Odoi’s brace put Forest on course for three vital points at the City Ground — first by playing teammate Archie Gray into trouble while attempting to build from the back, then by being caught out by an overhit cross.

In a match reported by ESPN, the Italian goalkeeper could do little to prevent Ibrahim Sangaré’s stunning strike as Spurs endured a desperate afternoon by the Trent.

The clouds had appeared to be lifting after a draw at Newcastle and wins over Brentford and Slavia Prague, but this was as bad as it has been under new boss Thomas Frank, who now comes under renewed scrutiny.

Tottenham were ragged, outfought and outthought, managing just one shot on target as the 3-0 scoreline flattered them.

In contrast, it was one of Forest’s best performances under manager Sean Dyche, lifting them six points clear of the relegation zone.

Forest set the tone early and were denied by the woodwork in the fifth minute.

Sangaré, playing his final match before heading to the Africa Cup of Nations, met Nicolò Savona’s cross perfectly, but his header struck the base of the post.

Igor Jesus saw his follow-up effort blocked before Neco Williams’ shot was parried by Vicario in what proved to be a rare positive moment for the Spurs goalkeeper.

Nikola Milenković then glanced a header just wide from another Williams cross as Forest continued to apply pressure.

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute after Spurs made a costly error while playing out from the back.

Vicario put Gray under pressure, allowing Sangaré to steal possession on the edge of the area before recovering from a heavy touch to tee up Hudson-Odoi, who slid the ball home from close range.

Spurs briefly threatened an immediate response, but Gray’s fizzed effort was well saved by John Victor — Tottenham’s only shot on target.

Five minutes after the restart, Forest doubled their lead, again exposing Vicario.
