Govt agency sheds light on concession agreements targeting road development in Zambia

The Road Development Agency (RDA) has reportedly sealed 11 concession agreements with private sector partners under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model to upgrade and maintain over 1,002 kilometres of roads nationwide.

RDA Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager, Anthony Mulowa, said the projects target key economic routes vital for boosting trade and spurring national development.

Among the flagship works are the Lusaka–Ndola dual carriageway, currently 36 percent complete, alongside the fully opened 45-kilometre Luanshya road.

“Bypass roads in Kapiri Mposhi are also progressing to ease town centre congestion,” Mulowa said in an interview at the recently ended 97th Agricultural and Commercial Show in Lusaka.

In the Copperbelt, the Ndola–Sakanya–Mufulira and Mufulira–Mokambo roads are under concession, with the latter featuring upgraded one-stop border posts built to international standards to facilitate cross-border trade.

Luapula Province would benefit from the Kasomena–Muenda road and bridge, linking Zambia to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) over the Luapula River.

This route would be the shortest link from Lusaka to the port of Dar es Salaam, complementing another DRC–Dar corridor to cut travel time and costs.

Mulowa stressed that the PPP model enabled Zambia to deliver large-scale infrastructure without overburdening public finances while ensuring roads are built to high standards.

“These projects are about connecting markets, unlocking economic potential, and positioning Zambia as a regional transport hub,” he said.
