Govt claims adequate fuel stocks as scarcity persists, grounds economic activities

State House says President Hakainde Hichilema has expressed grave concern over the fuel shortages reported across the country in recent days.

In a statement on Saturday, State House Chief Communication Specialist, Clayson Hamasaka, said the situation persists despite clear assurances given by Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) during the President’s recent meeting at State House regarding the availability of the commodity.

“While cognisant of prevailing global supply pressures arising from the conflict in the Middle East, the nation currently has adequate fuel stocks to meet domestic demand,” Hamasaka said.

He added that fuel remained the lifeblood of the economy, and any attempts to manipulate its supply were not only irresponsible but also amounted to economic sabotage and a direct violation of existing laws.

“The President has since directed the Energy Regulation Board, in collaboration with relevant law enforcement agencies, to immediately go on the ground to investigate and enforce existing laws, which may include revocation of licences against those found culpable,” he stated.

On Friday, traffic came to a standstill along Mungwi Road in Lusaka as trucks and motor vehicles blocked the road while motorists scrambled to refuel at one of the few filling stations that still had diesel.

A check in Kitwe on Friday found most filling stations, particularly those supplying diesel, out of stock.

Intermittent fuel shortages have continued across the country, with many service stations experiencing dry pumps, particularly for diesel.
