Govt moves to enhance profile of Livingstone town as world class tourist destination

Government has reportedly embarked on the Livingstone Town Centre Development Programme aimed at positioning the country’s tourism capital as a premier global destination.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the Livingstone City Council through the Ministry of Tourism’s Green Resilient and Transformational Tourism Development Project (GREAT-TDP), according Project Coordinator, Chilala Habasimbi.

Habasimbi confirmed the development in a statement issued in Livingstone on Friday, noting that government attached great importance to both public and private sector participation in achieving impactful results.

She revealed that the process had been subjected to a Landscape Design Competition pegged at US$90,000, aimed at generating innovative and technically sound conceptual designs to transform key streets, public spaces, and tourism hotspots in Livingstone City.

Habasimbi explained that once implemented, the Programme would boost Livingstone’s profile as a world-class tourist destination, attract more visitors, extend the average duration of stays, improve community living standards, and promote greener transport practices in the city.

“We are calling on all creative designers, town planners, architects and destination brand experts to take part in this competition. This co-creation competition of Livingstone as Zambia’s tourist capital gives especially the Zambians an opportunity to visualize and transform the city,” Habasimbi stated.

She further urged all interested and registered firms, both local and international, to participate in the competition, emphasizing that collective input would ensure the adoption of the most viable design for the tourist capital.

Meanwhile, the Livingstone City Council has expressed optimism about the initiative.

Director of Engineering Services, Brighton Nsonga, explained that the competition would be conducted in two stages—the first requiring interested parties to submit conceptual design proposals alongside their capabilities, and the second involving detailed design development.

The Ministry of Tourism stressed that the overall objective of the project was to improve basic infrastructure, enhance connectivity, and make tourism destination areas investment-ready for private sector growth.
