Group condemns mob violence in Mpika, calls for peaceful conflict resolution

Family Development Initiatives (FDI) has urged traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, and civic educators to intensify efforts in promoting peaceful conflict resolution and dispelling harmful myths that fuel violence in communities.

The call comes after a recent incident in Mpika, where a mob attacked a businessman, Ronald Musonda, over suspicions of witchcraft.

FDI Team Leader, Sheikh Yusuf Ayami, condemned the attack, describing it as a grave violation of human dignity and a direct threat to family stability.

“It is deeply troubling that baseless accusations of witchcraft can lead to destructive and traumatising acts, including property destruction, looting, and the endangerment of innocent lives,” Ayami said in a statement issued in Lusaka.

He called on law enforcement to pursue justice swiftly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.

“Mob justice has no place in a lawful and civilised society. Such actions only serve to tear apart the social fabric that holds families and communities together,” Ayami said.

He highlighted the psychological trauma suffered by Musonda’s family, particularly his daughter, who discovered a coffin during the attack, stressing that the emotional impact cannot be overstated.

“When communities resort to violence based on fear and superstition, they not only destroy livelihoods but also erode the values of empathy, justice, and unity that are essential for family development,” Ayami warned.

He reaffirmed FDI’s commitment to advocating for safe, respectful, and supportive environments where families can thrive free from fear, stigma, or violence.
