Actor and singer, Halle Bailey, has opened up about the racist backlash she faced after being cast as Ariel in The Little Mermaid, saying the experience ultimately helped her grow and stay grounded.

The actor and singer drew criticism from some fans who opposed the casting of a Black actress in the iconic role.

Speaking in a recent interview with The Independent as reported by Face2Face, Bailey described the experience as both challenging and transformative.

“It was a beautiful experience for me. I feel like it taught me to listen to myself and the good voices inside. I learnt how to block out the noise,” she said.

Bailey explained that being at the centre of intense public debate became unexpectedly freeing.

With opinions sharply divided, she said she began to view the situation as “an experiment,” observing how people reacted from a distance.

“I felt like I was watching myself… seeing how people react,” she said.

The You, Me & Tuscany star also reflected on how growing up in the entertainment industry has shaped her sense of self and helped keep her grounded.

She emphasised the importance of perspective, noting that fame and success were not what truly matter in life.

Instead, she highlighted gratitude, humility, and the value of personal relationships.

“I love feeling small, realising that the world is so big and beautiful and I’m just a tiny part of it. What matters is keeping our feet on the ground and holding the people we love,” Bailey said.
