Human Rights Commission condemns arbitrary arrest of pregnant woman in Lusaka

The Human Rights Commission (HRC) has strongly condemned the arbitrary arrest and invasion of privacy of Yvonne Simpamba, a nine-month pregnant woman from Garden House Compound in Lusaka.

According to reports, police officers from Leonard Cheelo Police Post in Kanyama Compound stormed Simpamba’s home around 01:00 hours on July 24, 2025, after failing to locate her husband, who was allegedly linked to a fraudulent land transaction case.

HRC’s Human Rights Advocacy Manager, Simon Mulumbi, stated in a Thursday press release that officers harassed Simpamba and her family, threatening to force her out in a wrapper (chitenge) while she sought privacy to dress properly.

Mulumbi expressed dismay at the handling of the situation by male officers, noting that their actions were humiliating and insensitive to Simpamba’s vulnerable condition.

He highlighted that established police guidelines stipulate that only female officers should handle female suspects to protect their rights and dignity.

“The Commission intervened by engaging the Police and secured Ms. Simpamba’s right to liberty and protection from arbitrary detention at 12:00 hours on the day she was taken into custody,” Mulumbi said.

He further condemned all forms of human rights violations, including arbitrary arrests and invasions of privacy, and indicated that the Commission intended to take additional measures to secure redress for the violation of Simpamba’s constitutional rights.
