‘I have made donations before…,’ Kwacha MP, Mulenga, calls church booing temporary political setback, blames rivals

Kwacha lawmaker, Charles Mulenga, has described the booing he received during a United Church of Zambia (UCZ) service in Kitwe, attended by President Hakainde Hichilema, as a ‘temporary political setback.

Appearing on Diamond Television on Wednesday night, Mulenga blamed the incident on political adversaries both within and outside the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND).

“I was surprised to hear congregants in a church where I have been before and made donations say they don’t know me. This happens in politics, to me this is a temporary political setback,” he said.

Mulenga suggested that those who denied knowing him were not regular congregants but people who only attended because of the President’s presence.

He vowed not to be distracted from his work in the constituency.

“I am doing a lot in Kwacha. Desks are being delivered, school infrastructure is being constructed, and I frequently visit residents,” he added.

The incident unfolded on Sunday at Kwacha East UCZ when Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo introduced Mulenga to the congregation.

Some worshippers murmured in disapproval, with others audibly saying “we don’t know him” and accusing him of neglecting the constituency.

The scene left President Hichilema and his entourage watching on in silence.

Mulenga entered Parliament in 2023 after the courts nullified the election of his predecessor, former lawmaker Joseph Malanji.

Other MPs introduced at the event included Chililabombwe’s Paul Kabuswe, Nchanga’s Derrick Chilundika, and Ndola Central’s Frank Tayali.
