The New Heritage Party (NHP) leader, Chishala Kateka, has accused the government of using college students to project popularity during campaigns.

Kateka expressed concern that students, being vulnerable and easily influenced by financial incentives, were being exploited for political purposes.

According to Kateka, this tactic is often used by governments losing public support and seeking to appear popular on the ground.

“Generally, when a government loses popularity, they begin to hire students. The students are the easiest target group because they know these people; a little money makes a difference to them,” she said in an interview with Zambia Monitor.

She emphasized that students were being used and cheapened in the process.

“The students themselves need to be aware that they are the future leaders of this country, and they must not allow themselves to be used and cheapened in the manner that they are being cheapened,” Kateka said.

Kateka questioned the government’s priorities, noting:

“Back in the day, students were at the forefront of things like liberating the country, taking policy positions, and guiding the country in the right direction.”

However, she observed that the current situation is starkly different.

“What the country is seeing now is totally not acceptable, as students continue to allow themselves to be used,” she said.
