Drama unfolded at Kitwe’s Kwacha East United Church of Zambia (UCZ) on Sunday when congregants openly denied knowing area Member of Parliament (MP), Charles Mulenga, during a church service attended by President Hakainde Hichilema.
The incident occurred after Copperbelt Minister, Elisha Matambo, introduced Mulenga, prompting murmurs among congregants, with some audibly declaring, “we don’t know him” and others shouting that he “never visits Kwacha Constituency.” President Hichilema and his entourage looked on during the awkward moment.
Mulenga entered Parliament in 2023 after the courts nullified the election of his predecessor, former lawmaker Joseph Malanji.
Other MPs introduced at the event included Chililabombwe’s Paul Kabuswe, Nchanga’s Derrick Chilundika, and Ndola Central’s Frank Tayali.

Meanwhile, President Hichilema donated K1.3 million towards church programmes at Kwacha East UCZ and the Mindolo Presbytery Centre.
He announced that K700,000 would go towards completing the Presbytery Centre, with an additional K500,000 added to the budget and K100,000 specifically allocated to three singing groups at Kwacha East UCZ.
“The role you play is very important. Since becoming President, I have been listening and learning a lot from the church. We need to internalise biblical teachings for us to achieve key milestones,” Hichilema said.
In solidarity, Mines and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe, Transport and Logistics Minister Frank Tayali, and Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo pledged K50,000 towards the completion of the Kwacha East UCZ church building.
Delivering a homily titled “A Call to Changing the Narrative,” Copperbelt Presbytery Bishop, Charles Lungu, called for mindset change if Zambia is to achieve meaningful progress.
He noted that as the UCZ prepares to celebrate its 60th Diamond Jubilee this year, the church’s focus will be on transforming the social, economic, and Christian outlook of the nation.
