Zambia’s Vice-President Mutale Nalumango says the government has nothing to do with the leaked audio featuring Community Development Minister, Doreen Mwamba, and Mafinga Lawmaker Robert Chabinga because they do not represent government position.

She was responding to the Mpika Member of Parliament, who asked in Parliament when will the government of Zambia address the issues raised in the leaked audio, which suggests an attempt to bribe South African courts on Friday.

“Madam speaker, I speak from my own interpretation as Vice President of the Republic of Zambia. Let us exercise discernment and clarity: the contents of that audio reflect an individual’s personal views and conjecture, not a statement of government policy or intent to bribe the South African courts,” Nalumango said.

She insisted that nowhere in the audio was it said that the government had resolved to act in the manner alleged.

“These are speculative utterances, devoid of official endorsement,” she said.

She added that in any democracy, an individual expressing opinions in private conversation with a Cabinet Minister, whether AI or not, cannot and should not be mistaken for the voice of government.

“I rest my case,” Nalumango said.
