Liverpool claimed a hard-fought 1–0 Premier League victory away at Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday.
Sunderland went into the clash enjoying a strong unbeaten home record this season and sitting comfortably in mid-table, while Liverpool arrived chasing a spot in the Champions League places, knowing three points would keep them firmly in contention.
According to the Guardian, the first half was tense and competitive as Sunderland defended with intensity and prevented Liverpool from finding a clear opening early on.

Liverpool grew into the contest as the game progressed, with Florian Wirtz and Mohamed Salah combining regularly to trouble Sunderland’s defence, Wirtz in particular caught the eye with dangerous deliveries and strong midfield presence.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute when Van Dijk rose highest at the back post to power home from a corner, sending the away support into celebration and handing Liverpool the lead in a tightly contested affair.
Sunderland responded with urgency as they looked to restore their unbeaten home status, pushing forward and creating several half-chances, but they were unable to find a breakthrough against a disciplined Liverpool rearguard.
The win for Liverpool ends Sunderland’s impressive home unbeaten run and gives Arne Slot’s side a boost in the race for a top-four finish, keeping them close to the Champions League qualification places.
