Lusaka woman in court for allegedly beating, biting husband

A 31-year-old woman of Lusaka’s Kalundu ZESCO area, has been accused of assaulting her husband, reportedly in self defense.

Nadia Vanleeve is alleged to have assaulted the husband, Thomas Songwe, on December 30 last year.

She faces a charge of assault occassioning actual bodily harm, contrary to Section 248 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the Republican laws.

Testifying before Lusaka Magistrate Chrispin Hampungani, investigating officer, Constable Daka, stated that Songwe reported the incident to the police, alleging that his wife had assaulted him.

According to investigations, Vanleeve discovered her husband with his girlfriend in their matrimonial bedroom, leading to a confrontation.

Songwe allegedly blocked Vanleeve’s path and when she pushed him, he squeezed her neck.

In self-defense, reportedly, Yanleeve bit her husband on the shoulder.

Constable Daka told the court that Songwe had visible bruises and cuts on his rib area and teeth bites when he reported the incident.

The officer also revealed that the couple has a history of frequent fights and the victim support unit had attempted to counsel the husband.

When Vanleeve was detained, Songwe reportedly arrived at the police station with his girlfriend, causing a disturbance.

Vanleeve refused to receive a medical report, citing her relationship with Songwe.

Under cross-examination, Constable Daka acknowledged that Vanleeve’s actions might have been in self-defense.

The matter has been adjourned for further proceedings.
