Mo Salah’s 95th-minute penalty seals Liverpool’s dramatic win over Burnley

Liverpool earned a last-gasp victory over Burnley in the Premier League on Sunday, thanks to a 95th-minute penalty from Mo Salah.

Pre-match attention had centered on new Liverpool signing Alexander Isak being left out of the squad. For much of the game, it looked a questionable decision as the Reds struggled to break down Burnley, with the first half passing without any notable chances as the hosts defended resolutely.

In a match reported by The Independent, Arne Slot’s side returned with greater urgency after the break, dominating possession but still failing to create many clear openings.

Their task became easier when Lesley Ugochukwu was sent off for a second bookable offense after a late challenge on Florian Wirtz.

Despite being reduced to 10 men, Burnley held firm until stoppage time, when Hannibal Mejbri handled inside the box to hand Liverpool a decisive spot-kick.

Salah calmly converted, securing all three points for the champions.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, manager Arne Slot explained his decision to leave Isak out of the squad:

“You make a choice for a good reason, for a good argument. That choice was because he missed four months of team training. He’s only in his second or third week of pre-season.

Maybe on Wednesday he will get more than 10 or 15 minutes. He needs proper playing time, but also a steady build-up.”

On Sky Sports, Slot admitted he was surprised by the length of added time:

“I settled really badly because after 90 minutes when I saw how much added time there was, I was shocked. I was still shocked when we got the penalty because five minutes of added time for me was unbelievable. Shocked and then happy Mo scored.”

Despite the tense finish, Slot was encouraged by the defensive display:

“It wasn’t a game we created a lot of chances, but against a team defending deep that’s normal. A clean sheet, hardly conceding from open play, and 12 points on the board—it’s a good base. We will only get better.”
