The State has compensated UPND Lusaka Province Chairperson, Obvious Mwaliteta, and another, K900,000 each for alleged wrong imprisonment in 2019.

According to a consent judgement entered into in February this year, the Attorney-General, Mulilo Kabesha, also agreed to settle the legal fees in the sum of K200,000 incurred by Mwaliteta and Kafue businessman, James Sichomba in prosecuting the suit against the State.

This is according to a consent judgement dated March 2, 2023 signed by Lusaka High Court Judge, Charles Kafunda.

The duo were represented by ZS Legal Practitioners.

Mwaliteta and Sichomba sued the Attorney-General in August, last year, demanding aggravated and exemplary damages as well as special damages for expenses incurred in the sum of K300,000.

This is in relation to a criminal matter in which the duo were arrested and prosecuted for possession of offensive weapons.

They were allegedly found with knives, stones, machetes and wooden pick handles in Kafue district.

They denied the offence and were subsequently acquitted by the Magistrate Court.

Mwaliteta and Sichomba submitted to Court that their prosecution was politically motivated based on the fact that they were members of UPND, an opposition party then to the ruling Patriotic Front Party government.
