The Movement for the Restoration of Education and Teachers Affairs (MORETA) Zambia has urged other unions to avoid creating divisions in the labour movement but begin to champion unity of purpose.

MORETA Zambia Executive Director, Dr. Sam Mbumba, noted with concern that the country often focused on criticizing and demonizing rather than acknowledging and appreciating the good work of certain labour movements.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Mbumba noted that in order to avoid divisions, there was need for other unions to consider affiliating themselves with the Zambia Congres of Trade Unions (ZCTU) in order to promote unity and cooperation among trade unions.

He emphasized the value of learning from one another and appreciating the efforts of organizations like ZCTU which have grown over the years due to their culture of promoting unity in the labour movement.

“I also want to call on the Federation of Free Trade Unions of Zambia (FFTUZ), the other big labour movement to emulate ZCTU and pick lessons in order to have a united labour movement in the country and speak with one voice,” Mbumba said.

He expressed gratitude and admiration for the ZCTU and its leadership, recognizing its long-standing presence and strength in the country.

Mbumba noted that ZCTU’s success was due to the sober and effective leadership it had demonstrated over the years and had shown that unity was cardinal in the representation of their members.
