MTN Mobile Money Zambia says it has launched a new service that enables customers to send money directly from their mobile wallets to international bank accounts in the European Union, the United Kingdom and Canada.
The company claimed that the service is currently the most affordable international money transfer option available on the Zambian market.
According to MTN, the service allows customers to transfer funds securely and instantly using internationally recognised banking identifiers.
In a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday, the company said the development expanded MTN MoMo’s remittance footprint beyond its earlier corridors, which included South Africa and India.
The company said the offering was intended to support Zambians making payments abroad for education, medical services, business, trade and family support.
It further said that its pricing structure was designed to reduce the cost barriers commonly associated with international money transfers.
Commenting on the launch, Chief Executive Officer, Komba Malukutila, said the introduction of the service followed demand for more accessible and compliant global money transfer options.
“With this launch, our customers can now send money directly to global bank accounts with confidence and ease,” Malukutila said.
“As the most affordable remittance service in Zambia, the company removes the high costs that have traditionally limited international money transfers, allowing customers to send money globally for as low as K5, whenever they need to,” he said.
Outbound remittance options from Zambia have historically been limited, he said with customers relying on traditional money transfer operators or informal channels that often involve higher fees and delays.
