The Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry says the Zambia China Mulungushi Textile (ZCMT) factory has commenced test runs, marking a significant milestone in the country’s industrial development.

Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer, Everness Nankala, said the US$140 million investment was set to revitalise Zambia’s textile industry and create direct jobs.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Thursday, Nankala noted that Mulungushi Textiles in Kabwe was a joint venture between Zambia and China aimed at reviving the country’s once-vibrant textile sector.

“The Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry (MCTI) is set to invite the public to witness the full test runs before the facility is commissioned by President Hakainde Hichilema later this year,” she said.

She added that the rehabilitation reflected the government’s commitment to boosting industrial capacity and creating employment opportunities for citizens.

“Once operational, Mulungushi Textiles is expected to contribute significantly to Zambia’s economic growth, reduce reliance on imports, and promote inclusive development,” Nankala said.
