A 35-year-old murder suspect, identified as Allan Chibuye, has died by suicide after hanging himself from the toilet window burglar bar inside a holding cell at Bauleni Police Post.

The incident occurred on March 24, 2026, between 04:00 and 06:00 hours, according to a statement issued in Lusaka on Wednesday by Zambia Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi.

Police said officers on duty were alerted by other detainees who noticed Chibuye hanging in the cell. When officers inspected the cell, they found him with a fabric strap tied around his neck and suspended from the toilet window burglar bar.

“He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival,” Chilabi said.

Chibuye had been detained for the alleged murder of his cousin, Gibson Zulu, which occurred on March 8, 2026, in Matero.

He was later apprehended in Kasisi on March 23, 2026, before being taken to Bauleni Police Post.

“His body is currently at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination,” he said.

Chilabi added that investigations were underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the death.

Police Clarify Viral Video on Political Event

Meanwhile, Chilabi addressed a separate matter involving a viral online video showing a man and a woman attending a political party event while wearing T-shirts labeled “Zambia Police Service” on the back and “ZP CCPU” on the front.

He said police instituted investigations which revealed that the incident took place on March 21, 2026, around 15:00 hours at Chisokone Market in the city of Kitwe.

“It has been confirmed that the individuals are NOT police officers. They are members of a Community Crime Prevention Unit (CCPU), also known as a Neighborhood Watch, and serve as community volunteers,” Chilabi said.

He explained that the two individuals were affiliated with the CCPU operating in the market area and that such units were legally established under Section 48 of the Zambia Police (Amendment) Act No. 14 of 1999.

“Membership is voluntary and open to individuals who live or work in the area where the unit operates. Their role is to support the Police in maintaining law and order within their communities,” he said.

Chilabi reminded all CCPU members that they were strictly prohibited from wearing police-branded attire or using police-related items while participating in political activities.

He said such conduct undermined the principle of impartiality upheld by the Zambia Police Service and risked bringing the Service’s uniform into disrepute.

“The matter is currently being addressed administratively,” Chilabi said.
