Vice President Mutale Nalumango has led hundreds of Kasama residents in paying their last respects to the late Mayor, Theresa Kolala, who died after a short illness.
Leaders from across the political divide gathered at Saint John’s Cathedral under the Catholic Church to honour Kolala, who served as Kasama’s first female mayor after being elected in 2021 on the Patriotic Front (PF) ticket.
Mpika Diocese Bishop, Edwin Mulandu, who presided over the church service, urged the faithful to emulate the late mayor, saying her works would be remembered for years to come.
Kasama Archbishop Ignatius Chama was also in attendance.

Speaking later during the burial service at Chiba Cemetery, Nalumango described Kolala as a distinguished servant of the people who championed development beyond political boundaries.
“This mayor we are putting to rest here championed development in many sectors of the country and did not consider political affiliation, which is worth emulating,” she said.
Nalumango called on Kasama residents to remain united beyond political lines, saying this was the ethos the late mayor strongly upheld during her lifetime.
Several PF figures aspiring for leadership positions—including Given Lubinda, Brian Mundubile, Chitalu Chilufya, Makebi Zulu (who attended after being discharged), and Greyford Monde—were also spotted during the funeral procession.
A by-election is expected to be called in accordance with constitutional requirements following Kolala’s death.
