Energy Minister, Makozo Chikote, has assured the nation that the ongoing diesel shortages are temporary and caused by logistical challenges, not by depleted fuel reserves.

Reports emerged this week that Lusaka had completely run out of diesel, sparking panic among motorists and concerns over fuel availability across the country.

“The Ministry of Energy acknowledges reports of fuel shortages experienced across the country over the past few days,” Chikote said in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He explained that both short and long-term measures had been put in place to address the supply disruptions and prevent future recurrences.

“The Ministry further wishes to inform the nation that, as of yesterday, Tuesday, 11th November 2025, the country had 57,385,360 litres of diesel and 40,082,000 litres of petrol,” Chikote disclosed.

He said the situation was expected to stabilise soon as normal distribution resumed countrywide.

“The government apologises to the public for the inconvenience caused and assures the nation of its continued commitment to maintaining a stable and reliable supply of petroleum products throughout Zambia,” he added.

The assurance comes amid increased scrutiny from the public and industry stakeholders following reports of erratic fuel supplies in several parts of the country.
