The Zambia Police Service in Mbala District, Northern Province, has reported a fatal road traffic accident in which one person died and five others sustained injuries.
The accident occurred on January 31, 2026, around 19:00 hours, along the Mbala–Nakonde Road in Chipoka area, approximately 66 kilometres from Mbala Town.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Police Spokesperson, Godfrey Chilabi, said the truck driver involved fled the scene and remains unidentified.
“The accident involved two vehicles: a Mitsubishi Rosa minibus, registration number APB 4349, carrying six passengers, and a Tanzanian-registered Benz Actros truck and trailer, registration numbers T835 AXB and T104 BDC,” he said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the Mitsubishi Rosa, driven by Kelvin Chibesa, 37, of Kasama, was heading towards Mbala when it was struck by the oncoming truck, whose driver failed to keep to his side of the road.

Chilabi stated that the bus veered off the road to its left side during the collision, resulting in the death of passenger Elvis Mfula, 50, of Solwezi, who sustained fatal head injuries and died on the spot.
“The driver and four other passengers suffered minor injuries. They were treated at Chipoka Health Centre and have since been discharged,” he added.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at Mbala General Hospital Mortuary, awaiting postmortem examination.
Chilabi confirmed that investigations into the accident were ongoing and a manhunt for the truck driver had been launched.
