Nigerian international and African Footballer of the Year, Ademola Lookman, has completed a permanent transfer from Italian side Atalanta to Atlético Madrid, the Spanish club has confirmed.

According to a statement published on Atlético Madrid’s official website, the 27-year-old forward signed a long-term contract after successfully completing a medical examination in Madrid, bringing an end to his three-year spell in Serie A.

The club did not disclose the financial details of the transfer, however, according to ESPN and Football España, the deal is understood to be worth around €40 million, including performance-related add-ons, making it one of the most expensive transfers involving a Nigerian footballer.

BBC Sport reports that Atlético Madrid moved decisively to secure Lookman after identifying him as a key attacking reinforcement, impressed by his pace, versatility and consistent output in Italy and European competition.

Lookman joins the Spanish side following a highly successful period at Atalanta.

According to UEFA’s official competition reports, he scored a historic hat-trick in the 2024 UEFA Europa League final, leading Atalanta to their first major European trophy.

His performances at club and international level were recognised later that year when he was named CAF African Footballer of the Year, becoming the first Nigerian to win the award since 1999, according to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Born in London, Lookman began his professional career at Charlton Athletic before moving to Everton, with later spells at RB Leipzig, Fulham and Leicester City, according to Sky Sports’ career records.

At international level, according to the Nigeria Football Federation, Lookman committed his future to Nigeria in 2022 and has since become a regular member of the Super Eagles squad.

Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone is expected to integrate Lookman into the squad immediately as the club continues its push in domestic and European competitions, according to Spanish daily Marca.
