Police in Mporokoso District have arrested a 23-year-old man for allegedly defiling his 12-year-old sister and infecting her with a sexually transmitted disease, authorities said on Sunday.

The matter was reported by the children’s mother, Elizabeth Chansa, 50, who told police that her daughter had been sexually abused by her older son, who is the victim’s biological brother.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, said in a statement that the girl first developed body rashes in March 2026 and was treated at a nearby clinic. Although her condition initially improved, she later complained of itching and was found to have sores.

“The mother took the victim to Mporokoso Clinic, and after medical examination, the victim was diagnosed with an STI,” Mulonda said.

He said health workers questioned the girl in the presence of her mother, but she initially denied being sexually assaulted. They advised the mother to report the matter to the police.

When police officers later interviewed the girl, she revealed that she had been sexually abused by her elder brother on three occasions.

Mulonda said the victim was issued with a medical report form and the suspect was arrested. He is expected to appear in court soon.

“The elder brother, who is supposed to protect the young sister, is the one who sexually abused her, which is quite unfortunate,” he said.

Mulonda warned would-be offenders that incest is a very serious offence attracting stiff custodial punishment.
