Police in Northern Province have announced readiness to enforce traffic and public safety regulations during this year’s Ukusefya Pang’wena traditional ceremony, set for August 9, 2025, in Mungwi District.

Provincial Police Commanding Officer, Lucky Munkhondya, said in a statement on Wednesday that the police had taken note of the heightened excitement that typically accompanied events of such magnitude.

“As you know, this traditional ceremony, like many others, offers a rich cultural reflection and serves as a unifying event for people from all walks of life. In view of this, the police is duty-bound to ensure the safety and general security of the public during the event,” Munkhondya said.

She noted that while the ceremony was a time of celebration, it had in the past been marred by road traffic accidents resulting in injuries and loss of life.

Munkhondya urged motorists and cyclists to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol in order to prevent accidents.

She also warned individuals intending to exploit the event to engage in criminal activities that they would face serious consequences.

“The police is on high alert to ensure that anyone intending to commit crimes will be met with the full force of the law,” she said.
