Police in Lusaka have launched investigations into the suspected murder of Nalishebo Sikundu, aged 31, of Kalingalinga Compound.

The body of Sikundu was discovered in the early hours of Tuesday, July 29, 2025, and the incident was reported to police at approximately 05:30 hours by Mervis Chinsungwe, aged 55, a resident of the same compound.

According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, Chinsungwe found the naked body of an unidentified female in the unfenced yard of her residence around 05:00 hours.

Police officers who responded to the scene confirmed the presence of a deceased female adult lying on the ground, exhibiting signs of rigor mortis.

Hamoonga said initial observations revealed hematomas around the neck, raising suspicions of strangulation.

Near the body, police found a pair of torn underwear in two pieces and a torn t-shirt located about one meter away.

“There were no visible signs of struggle on the ground, despite the surface being sandy and loosely packed with stones,” Hamoonga stated.

Preliminary interviews with residents of the house revealed that none of them heard any disturbances during the night.

Following a community engagement, the deceased was positively identified by Annie Lungu, aged 53, who is her aunt.

It was established that Sikundu had recently moved out of her aunt’s home and was living independently at the time of her death.

Hamoonga said the body has been transported to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be conducted to determine the actual cause of death.

An inquiry file has been opened, and police investigations are ongoing.

“Members of the public with any information that may assist in this case are urged to come forward and cooperate with the police,” Hamoonga added.

He assured the public that the Zambia Police Service remains committed to ensuring justice is served and appealed for calm and vigilance within the community.
