President Hichilema pledges better sports infrastructure, youth talent development

President Hakainde Hichilema has reaffirmed government’s commitment to building sports infrastructure, enhance training programmes, and support grassroots initiatives that support young people.

He said the UPND administration’s policies on sports and youth were very clear because it believed that every young person deserves a chance to shine.

The Head of State said this in a speech read on his behalf by Green Economy and Environment Minister, Mike Mposha, during the official opening of the ZANACO grassroots U17 football tournament taking place at Sunset Stadium.

The U17 football tournament which is taking place from August 9 to August 11, 2025 has attracted various teams involved in talent identification.

“We are committed to creating an enabling environment were talent can flourish, where opportunities are accessible to all, and where the values of teamwork, discipline, and resilience are nurtured from an early age,” President Hichilema assured.

He added that the government would continue to work tirelessly with partners like ZANACO to create opportunities, foster talent, and build a nation proud of its youth and achievements.

Hichilema commended ZANACO for its visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to supporting government’s efforts in youth development.

“Your partnership reflects what we believe as a government, that no nation can rise higher than the potential of its youth,” he said.

The President stated that by investing in young Soccer players today, the country was sowing seeds for stronger, more prosperous Zambia tomorrow.

He noted youths were the heartbeat of Zambia’s future and that it was through their talent, dedication, and unity that the country would realise its national vision of prosperity and social cohesion.

“This tournament is not just about football, it is about nurturing the dreams of our young people, instilling values that transcends the game, and laying a foundation for Zambia’s bright tomorrow,” President Hichilema stated.

He concluded by urging young people to embrace values, to dream big, and to remember that their talent was Zambia’s future and would inspire generations.
