President Hakainde Hichilema has announced plans to increase allowances for traditional leaders and their retainers in the upcoming national budget.
He also emphasised the crucial partnership between government and traditional leaders in driving national development.
Hichilema said this during this Year’s Kulamba Traditional Ceremony of the Chewa Speaking People in Katete District, Eastern Province.
He stated that the government would procure motorbikes for chiefs and build houses for retainers to enhance their ability to serve the chiefs.
He also highlighted government’s commitment to supporting its citizens through various social protection programs, including Cash for Work and Social Cash Transfer initiatives.
“This move underscores the administration’s dedication to the well-being of its people,” President Hichilema stated.
He also requested traditional leaders to actively monitor Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects across the country and report any issues in order to ensure that problems were addressed promptly.

“Next week in I’m coming to inspect works on the Chipata to Lundazi Road which my government promised to do among other roads such as Katete to Chainda border. I want these roads among others to be done with standard and of quality,” President Hichilema said.
He highlighted government’s efforts to empower councils and constituencies to purchase road grading machines, with the expectation that the machines would be used to maintain feeder roads.
He also commended Paramount Chief Kalonga Gawa-Undi for his commitment to preserving culture and heritage, highlighting the significance of the efforts.
The ceremony was attended by Malawian, President Lazarus Chakwera, along with senior government officials from Malawi, Zambia, and Mozambique.
