The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed Chipolopolo great and current assistant coach Moses Sichone as the new head coach of the national team.

Sichone will be assisted by his former teammates from his playing days — Andrew Sinkala, who has been based in Germany, and Green Eagles coach Perry Mutapa.

2012 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning goalkeeper, Kennedy Mweene has been named goalkeeper coach, while Noel Mwandila takes charge as strikers’ coach and Chipolopolo legend Joseph Musonda assumes the role of fitness coach.

FAZ General Secretary, Machacha Shepande, said the new technical team will lead the Chipolopolo in the Morocco 2025 AFCON campaign.

“The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) is excited to announce the new chapter of the Chipolopolo, which sees the youthful and dynamic quartet of Moses Sichone, Andrew Sinkala, Perry Mutapa, and Kennedy Mweene appointed in charge of the Chipolopolo project,” Shepande said in a statement on Wednesday.

He explained that FAZ had considered the unique circumstances of securing a coach in the short term and opted to place confidence in local talent with strong international exposure.

Shepande noted that the combined experience of the new technical bench from their playing careers in top leagues, coupled with their transition into coaching, made them a capable and inspiring team.

Sichone previously served as long-time assistant to former head coach Avram Grant.

Sinkala, who once starred for Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, FC Köln, Augsburg, and SC Paderborn, transitioned into coaching in Germany after retirement.

Sinkala and Mutapa, both products of the 1999 FIFA Under-20 World Cup under coach Patrick Phiri, went on to represent Zambia at senior level following their exploits at the youth tournament.

Sinkala holds a UEFA B Plus Licence and currently coaches FC Hennef, having previously worked with TFC Cologne.

Mweene, meanwhile, serves as goalkeeper coach at South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns.

The new technical bench’s first assignment will be the international friendlies during the November 15 and 18 FIFA window, when Zambia faces South Africa and Burundi respectively.
