Sino Metals acid spillage assessment report recommends relocation of affected residents

0

An assessment carried out by Applied Science and Technology Associates on the Sino Metals Leach Limited acid spillage has recommended comprehensive livelihood restoration support, including the relocation of affected residents.

The consultant was engaged by the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) to conduct comprehensive social and environmental assessments following the incident.

According to the report, the dam failure occurred on February 18, 2025, releasing approximately 50,000 tonnes of toxic waste into the environment.

The spillage polluted the Kafue River and surrounding areas, affecting aquatic life, water supplies and agricultural activities along the river.

Presenting the findings during a public dissemination meeting in Kitwe on Tuesday, Applied Science and Technology Associates consultant, Dr. Dina Mambwe, said the impact of the spillage was significant enough to necessitate the relocation of residents.

“Inteventions should include skills training and empowerment programmes, prioritising vulnerable groups like women, the elderly, and persons with disabilities,” Mambwe stated.

Mambwe further recommended the establishment of a clear and accessible grievance redress mechanism to enable affected communities to raise concerns and have them addressed promptly.

The report identified the Kalusale community in Chambishi as the area that suffered the most extensive damage following the collapse of Tailings Dam TD15 at Sino Metals.

“There is need for fair and transparent relocation of affected households and that government should construct equivalent or better housing for displaced families,” the report stated.
