Socialist Party unveils energy plan to transform Zambia’s power sector

The Socialist Party (SP) has unveiled what it claims is a comprehensive energy plan aimed at transforming Zambia’s power sector through collective ownership, renewable energy, and sustainable development.

In a statement, party president, Dr. Fred M’membe, said the central principle of the initiative was empowering locally owned companies to create an inclusive and community-driven energy programme.

He explained that the plan seeks to deliver affordable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable energy services to accelerate both social and economic development.

M’membe outlined a number of key measures under the strategy, including the establishment of a renewable energy division within ZESCO to harness solar, wind, thermal and biomass resources.

He added that the SP would support the creation of publicly owned and locally accountable energy companies and co-operatives to compete with ZESCO and private suppliers, with at least one operating in every region of the country.

On petroleum energy, M’membe disclosed that the party would expand Zambia’s sources while ensuring that all domestic needs are processed locally to reduce dependence on imports.

He explained that the plan also included the creation of a specialised research institute to focus on people-centred energy security and the formulation of a long-term 50-year energy infrastructure development strategy.

M’membe stressed that the party’s approach to energy goes beyond building national capacity, as it was designed to ensure communities benefit directly from sustainable, locally controlled initiatives.
