South African DJ Shimza has dismissed speculation that his relationship with a senior government official has helped advance his career, saying he has never received state tenders or special treatment.
Speaking on an episode of the podcast Podcast and Chill with MacG, the internationally known DJ addressed claims that his association with Athi Geleba, spokesperson to South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, had opened doors for him in government-related business.
Shimza said he earns his income independently through music performances and events rather than government contracts, according to Timeslive.
“Can you just tell me which tender? I work for my money. Government does events every day, and they have other artists that they book. They have service providers that they book, and I’m not in that,” he said.

He added that engaging in questionable dealings linked to his partner’s role would jeopardise her career.
“Imagine me doing those funny things with my woman’s job. She’d be out of a job, and I’d have to look after her. I don’t have to; I’m not a starving artist. I’m not that type of guy that does shady things,” he said.
Shimza also spoke about his recent weight loss, attributing the change to lifestyle adjustments rather than medication.
He said cutting sugar from his diet, avoiding fast food while touring and drinking only water had played a major role in improving his health.
“I stopped eating burgers and stuff and cut the sugar. I don’t drink any sugar now; I always drink water,” he said.
The DJ added that regular exercise has been key to maintaining his fitness, revealing that he runs about five kilometres daily.
While he prefers natural methods, Shimza said he does not judge people who use weight-loss medication such as Ozempic.
“I don’t think there’s anything wrong with people using Ozempic. Now you want people to lose weight the way you want to lose weight?” he said.
Shimza remains one of South Africa’s most prominent DJs, performing at major events locally and internationally and expanding his presence in the global electronic music scene.
