The Swedish government has reaffirmed its commitment to working with Zambia in promoting democracy, good governance, and sustainable development through strengthened partnerships with government institutions and civil society organisations.

Swedish Embassy in Lusaka, First Secretary and Head of Political and Commercial Section, Ahmed Ismail, said his government would continue to work with various stakeholders in various areas to support the Zambian free and fair democracy

Ismail said this during a courtesy call on Luapula Province Acting Permanent Secretary, Evans Sikabbubba, who represented Provincial Permanent Secretary, Prudence Chinama Kangwa on Wednesday.

He said the Embassy was in Luapula Province as part of its regular visits to monitor ongoing interventions aimed at strengthening democratic governance and development across Zambia.

“We are here to visit some of our interventions in Zambia, including those covering Luapula Province, specifically targeting the election and democratic space. Sweden has been a long-time partner in Zambia’s development,” Ismail said.

He noted that this year marked the 60th anniversary of bilateral relations, and that Sweden was proud to have contributed to areas such as agriculture, democracy, and governance in Zambia.

Ismail highlighted Sweden’s unwavering support towards the promotion of free and fair elections, especially as Zambia prepared for the 2026 General Elections, emphasizing the importance of collective efforts in sustaining democracy.

“We are happy to be here and look forward to our continued engagement with Luapula Province,” he added.

Sikabbubba stated that Sweden’s commitment over the past 60 years was a testament to the strength of the diplomatic relations, which have yielded tangible benefits in agriculture, democracy, and social development.

He reaffirmed the Provincial Administration’s readiness to deepen collaboration with Sweden and other development partners in advancing decentralisation, good governance, and inclusive economic growth.

“As a province, we value partnerships that help build stronger institutions, empower communities, and promote transparency. We look forward to deepening this cooperation for the betterment of the people of Luapula and Zambia as a whole,” Sikabbubba said.
