Police in Lusaka have instituted investigations into a hit and run fatal Road Traffic Accident (RTA) that occurred on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at around 05:20 hours.

Involved in the accident that occured along St. Ignatius Road, near the New Apostolic Church, opposite Flower Gardens was a motor vehicle, believed to be a Toyota Vitz registration number unknown, which was travelling from north to south.

Police Assistant Public Relations Officer Chipo Kaitisha in a statement issued in Lusaka on Saturday said the extent of damage to the vehicle was not yet known as the driver fled the scene.

The accident involved two male pedestrians Mathews Kasongo, aged 53, of House No. MC 236A, ZAF Twinpalm–a Warrant Officer Class 1 currently serving in the Zambia Air Force.

He was jogging on the right side of the road, heading northwards and sustained a broken right leg and general body pains and is currently admitted to Maina Soko Medical Hospital for treatment.

The other person is Stephen Moloshi, aged 57, of House No. MC 243A, ZAF Twinpalm – a retired ZAF officer, was also jogging northwards, off the main carriageway.

“He sustained serious injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Levy Mwanawasa Teaching Hospital,” Kaitisha said.

She said Moloshi’s body has since been transferred to Maina Soko Medical Hospital Mortuary, pending postmortem examination.

Kaitisha stated that the exact circumstances surrounding the accident were still under investigation, and efforts to trace the unknown driver have been intensified.

“The Zambia Police Service wishes to strongly warn all motorists against engaging in reckless driving and abandoning accident scenes,” she warned.

Kaitisha said a hit-and-run was a serious offense, and anyone found responsible would face the full force of the law.

She urged members of the public with any information that may assist in identifying the vehicle or driver involved in the incident to come forward and report to the nearest Police station.

“The Zambia Police Service conveys its deepest condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and the Zambia Air Force community on the tragic loss of Moloshi Stephen. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time,” Kaitisha said.
