Two family members die after house collapses in Mporokoso

Two members of the same household have died in Mporokoso District of Northern Province after their house collapsed on them during the night, following heavy rainfall that weakened the structure.

Northern Province Police Commanding Officer, Simunji Mulonda, confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, saying the victims suffocated after the house caved in.

The bodies of the deceased have since been deposited in the Mporokoso District Hospital mortuary awaiting burial arrangements.

According to police, the incident occurred after a heavy downpour on March 28, 2026, at around 16:00 hours. The following morning at about 06:00 hours, Chileshe Mulenga, 21, of Kaliminwa Village, was passing by the house when he noticed it had collapsed.

Mulenga called out to the occupants but received no response, prompting him to alert community members, who later reported the matter to the police.

A team of officers rushed to the scene and during the retrieval process, discovered that two people had died, not one as initially assumed.

“The other person was later identified as Lillian Kabwe, aged 14, also of the same abode,” Mulonda said.

Upon inspection, officers observed that Saviour Bwalya had bruises on the legs and foam coming from the mouth and nose, while Lillian Kabwe had bruises on her back, suspected fractured hands, and blood oozing from the mouth and nose.

Mulonda said preliminary findings indicated that the house collapsed during the night after its mud walls were weakened by the heavy rains, leading to the suffocation of the two victims.

He urged the public to build stronger, weather-resilient structures to prevent similar tragedies.

“Members of the public are urged to construct houses which can withstand weather conditions to avoid such a calamity,” Mulonda said.
