The University of Zambia Lecturers and Researchers Union (UNZALARU) has set December 19, 2025, for a peaceful protest march to State House to demand payment of outstanding gratuities and pensions dating back to 2016.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, UNZALARU General Secretary. Dominic Liche, said the march aimed to draw President Hakainde Hichilema’s attention to longstanding and unresolved challenges affecting the University of Zambia and its employees.

“These challenges include outstanding gratuities and pensions dating back to 2016, problems relating to the superannuation scheme under Zambia State Insurance Corporation (ZISC), delayed institutional grant disbursements from government and inadequate wage bill coverage,” Liche said.

He added that other issues included persistent delays in the payment of allowances, unsustainable restructuring of the university, interference by the Emoluments Commission in the negotiation of conditions of service, and deteriorating infrastructure and teaching facilities, among other concerns.

Luche confirmed that the union had formally notified the Zambia Police Service Lusaka Division Headquarters about the planned march.

“The police requested for further information through a meeting and we attended the meeting at which necessary information was provided. We will communicate additional updates as soon as official feedback is received and we encourage our members to attend this important protest march,” he said.

The peaceful march is scheduled to start from the Great East Campus and proceed to State House.
